“Is this really for outside?!”
We hear that a lot as customers explore our showroom, and it’s a perfectly good question.
As technology in marine grade materials advances, manufacturers are increasingly able to bring the indoors out, which means outdoor furniture with plush cushions, vibrant colors, and intricate textures is becoming the norm. And while these cushions are designed to withstand the toughest mother nature can throw at them, they are not invincible.
The quality outdoor cushions of today are armed with the latest technology to survive stains, fading, moisture, heat and humidity, but they do require some care if you wish for them to last longer than 5 years. The good news is…
Here’s the bare minimum you should do to keep your cushions looking great for longer:
Clean your outdoor cushions (both sides!) with warm, soapy water and a soft bristle brush at least once a year.
Store or cover your cushions when you’re out of town for extended periods, and during winter.
Keep cushions free of debris by brushing them off periodically.
Wash more than once per year.
Apply 303 Fabric Guard protectant after the first wash of the season.
Clean and protect your frames, too. Use the same warm soapy water and 303 frame protectant once per year.
The bottom line.
You don’t HAVE to do anything. You can leave this stuff out rain or shine. You don’t have to clean it. You don’t have to store it. But it will show. After about 5 years, your cushions are going to look like they’ve been rode hard and put away wet…because they have!
You can think of outdoor furniture like your car - it has the latest and greatest in paints and finishes, but imagine how it would look if – in 5 years – you had never washed it, never vacuumed the interior, never checked your tire pressure, or never put it in a garage. It would probably still drive fine, but I bet it would look pretty rough! Outdoor furniture is exactly like that.
As with most things, a little love goes a long way.
